Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed looks scheduled for release in the US on 18th November on PS3, 360 and Wii U (ready for launch) and on December 11th on 3DS and Vita. This breadth of characters is perhaps the game's best hope to see off newcomer karting challengers from LittleBigPlanet Karting and F1 Race Stars this holiday season. The danger here is that one character becomes a one size fits all and everyone argues about playing with them - well, that's how it seems to go in my family.Įncouraging players to use the full pantheon of Sega All Stars is not only an opportunity to introduce a new generation of potential gamers to its various IPs but also essential for the game if it is to achieve the longevity it needs to match Mario Kart - particularly with a Wii U version looming. If All Stars Racing Transformed can match this with well balanced tracks that suite its wide range of characters it could be onto a winner. The absence of blue-shell or lightening style Mario Kart weapons will be welcomed by both me and the kids. Race as Sonic and a host of legendary All-Stars and prepare to transform Speed across land, sea and air in a high velocity battle to the finish line, as your amazing transformable vehicle changes from car to boat to plane mid-race. I liked the fact that the emphasis is on the racing rather than the battling. My time with the game wasn't long enough to offer a final verdict but first impressions are good. Of course the proof of any kart racer is in the driving.
The Panza Dragoon circuit I played featured a collapsing causeway for instance. The tracks also respond to the player different now, changing as you race around them. New tricks since the previous game include the ability to change your vehicle into flighted or water-bound versions - transform even. Add to this the steady leveling up of each persona and you have a sense of character progression usually reserved for shooters. Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed seems to take other tips from the Blur playbook too with a load-out style system that lets players customize what sort of character they are controlling. Maybe one of the nails in its coffin was that the full co-operative campaign was limited to online multi-player.
Take Blur on 360 and PS3 for instance, a superb (if ill-fated) kart racing game with a great local four player mode. Other kart racer contenders have erred on the side of the hard-core and limited local multi-player to a special mode.
